In the road to harmonise road safety approaches, having highly trained and certified auditors is a significant breakthrough. This move by the IRF is a “great deal” for the global road safety community—empowering local professionals and ensuring every new road project meets strict, unified safety standards. Well-tuned auditors are now at the heart of a safer, fairer journey for all.

The International Road Federation (IRF) has recently advanced global road safety efforts with the launch of its International Road Safety Auditors Registry, setting new standards for transparency, quality, and professionalism in independent road safety audits. Announced at the IBTTA Global Tolling Summit in Lyon, the registry establishes a robust, accessible platform to certify and list qualified road safety auditors, setting benchmarks vital for governments, financiers, and infrastructure project owners worldwide.

Driving Consistency in Road Safety Audits

Road safety audits—formal, independent checks on road projects at all design and operational stages—are proven tools for identifying and mitigating crash risks, yet their execution has varied greatly from country to country. By offering a standardised certification and verification platform, the IRF Registry responds to mounting demands from multilateral development banks and international donors for reliable audit mechanisms and qualified expert teams.

Building Global Confidence and Local Talent

The IRF Road Safety Auditors Registry directly supports key global initiatives such as the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety and Sustainable Transport. Entry into the registry, with certification based on both rigorous training (minimum 60 hours required) and documented experience, is available through three recognition levels: Observer, Team Member, and Team Leader. This system not only cements professional standards, but also opens career doors for young engineers and women, especially in low- and middle-income countries—helping to foster a "just transition" in mobility and sustainable infrastructure.

Setting the Standard for the Future

By embedding auditing requirements at every stage of road projects, the IRF Registry offers a credible resource to governments and project owners, supporting the accountability needed for complex infrastructure developments. Auditors must maintain up-to-date profiles and training, and undergo regular verification to ensure standards are upheld. These measures form a powerful foundation for building resilience, achieving the Global Goals, and accelerating a culture of safe road design worldwide.
